SEED Project
PCI has begun work on its S.E.E.D. (Student Education Enhancement Donors) project,
which will recruit professionals in the community to volunteer to work with elementary
school children for one or two hours a week, at a time of their choosing, helping
students in skill building, homework, etc. in the public elementary schools.
By
taking time off from work, (usually during the least productive time of the week,
like Friday afternoon, or first thing in the morning) and spending a short period
of time in a local school, helping children at risk, people in the community can
be part of the team that makes a difference in that child's life. It's not much
of a time commitment, but it will work wonders.
With dwindling resources, schools
need all the help they can get from the community in helping children succeed. S.E.E.D.
is set up so that within a company, people volunteer in groups of three, so every
week, at least one person will be available. This means that the commitment is once
every three weeks, for a few hours (or more if you wish).
Prospective volunteers need to complete the School Volunteer Program registration form,Click here to download, and return it to S.E.E.D Office. Teachers and after-school program directors will give the volunteers a suggested list of things to be worked on, and will be present in the classroom with the volunteers.
The goal will be to pair the volunteers with the same group of children, so a relationship can be built. S.E.ED. for Success will recognize companies for percentage of employee participation, 100% follow-thru each semester, and highest total participation. We have already created the non-profit structure, and gotten commitments from schools—we hope to start placing volunteers in the fall.
